dark night of the soul

This is the final project I undertook as part of my honours year at university.

In his book God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, Christopher Hitchens argues that all religions are versions of the same untruth and that the influence of churches and the effect of religious belief is positively harmful. In Dark Night of the Soul (Revised) I have tried to communicate some of the concepts that Hitchens discusses in his book by means of illustration rather than text. I have taken excerpts of text from God is Not Great that best communicate Hitchens' integral ideas and combined them with my own illustrations to create a new way of looking at his work. Historically, religions have represented their ideas visually to great effect in order to celebrate mythology and to reinforce dogma. My intention is to provoke interest, recognition, reaction and engagement with Hitchens' anti-theism. Perhaps this project won't do that, people are short of time to read these days after all—maybe they'll like the illustrations and remember them and the provocation may be unconscious until one day... God? What was I thinking?
